Bow Tie: A flash fiction story

No. 33/100 flash fiction stories

Sylvia adjusted Jared’s bow tie. His eyes darted around every which way as if he’d rather focus on anything other than her. Sylvia smiled, a twitch of her lips that Jared, of course, didn’t see.

“You’ve been undercover at least a thousand times,” she said, giving him a quick pat on the chest as she finished. “Why so nervous?”

Jared’s dark eyes locked onto her, turning to that particular brand of steel she knew so well. “I’m not nervous.”

His “business mode” didn’t scare her one bit. “Mmhm,” she said with a nod and purse of her lips.

Jared’s rigid expression slackened a little. His eyes wandered again, this time to the floor. “I’ve…never worn a suit.”

Sylvia raised an eyebrow. “Really? I would have never guessed!”

“You’re not making this any easier,” he grumbled.

“Making it easier isn’t my job. Teaching you most certainly is – which means that the worst is yet to come.”

“Worst?” A true flicker of fear flashed in his eyes. “What can be worse than this?” He tugged at the slim gap between his neck and collar with a grimace.

Sylvia flashed a grin and took his hand. “Dancing.”

When you write as much as I do, you have to take frequent breaks from sitting. A standing desk (not a whole desk, but a mini desk that will sit on top of my current desk with my laptop, keyboard, and mouse and extend upward) will allow me to continue working while maintaining that good blood flow to my brain. Thank you so much for your support that allows me to keep producing free content. God bless you! ♥️ E.J.
