One Week into Writing a Novel…

Hanging in there, writers? Whether you’re doing NaNo or not, it’s a good idea to take a breather every now and then to assess how you’re doing. How are you progressing toward your writing goals? How do you feel about those goals right now?

My progress with NaNo has, so far, been pretty steady. I decided I was participating last minute because it struck me that if I actually wrote 50k this month, it would finish my draft of Project Pea. I’m not starting from the beginning of the novel, and that’s okay.

As I always say, NaNo is just for fun, and it’s there for you. So however you want to do it, go for it! Maybe you’re even reading this now and you haven’t done NaNoWriMo, but you still want to. It’s not too late. Only a week in, it’s easy to catch up. You just have to write a little over 2,060 words a day (assuming you started today), and there’s a good chance you can knock out a chunk of what you missed in one or two good writing sessions.

And for those of you who just can’t swing NaNo this year: that’s okay, too! I’ve been there. This is the first time I’ve officially done NaNo in quite a while because there was just too much going on. This year, I’m determined to make the time.

Whether you’re a Wrimo or not, here are three key things to remember as you’re writing this week:

  1. You are not alone. Write with a buddy; do writing sprints together and keep each other accountable.
  2. Your rough draft isn’t your best work. And it’s not supposed to be! Let it be bad. It’ll be that much better when you then refine it into something incredible.
  3. Get up from your desk now and then. Make sure to eat and stay hydrated to fuel those creative juices! Go on a walk or sit outside for a bit. Your body and brain need breaks!

Most of all, have fun doing what you love. I can’t wait to see the stories you come up with!

Happy writing!
-E.J.

When you write as much as I do, you have to take frequent breaks from sitting. A standing desk (not a whole desk, but a mini desk that will sit on top of my current desk with my laptop, keyboard, and mouse and extend upward) will allow me to continue working while maintaining that good blood flow to my brain. Thank you so much for your support that allows me to keep producing free content. God bless you! ♥️ E.J.
