Forked Tongue

No. 10/100 100-word short stories for my 100 follower celebration!

I was suddenly glad that I hadn’t cut my hair that morning as sweat trickled down the side of my face from my temple. The hunter’s gaze was unrelenting, but I swore to myself that I wouldn’t look away.

“I told you,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady, “I’ve never heard of a giant scaly creature anywhere around here. They get those kinds of monsters down south, but it’s pretty peaceful here.”

The hunter continued to sneer, his expression unchanging. I prayed that he wouldn’t see the sweat…

…and that the dragon in my house would stay hidden.
