I knew what the mechanic would say before the words were out of her mouth. The slightly apologetic tilt of the eyebrows, the reservation in the eyes, the uncomfortable shifting of the arms… I’d seen it all too many times.
“I’m sorry, she’s a goner.”
I scoffed. The old girl had gotten pretty beat up this time, it was true, but she’d survived this long; I wasn’t about to let her get turned to scrap now.
“I’ll do the work myself.” I slid underneath the ship and smirked at the mechanic’s wide eyes. “Maybe I’ll even let you take notes.”
