The Flower

No. 2/100 100-word short stories for my 100 follower celebration – and remember to follow my journey as I rewrite my YA novel for traditional publication!

Cynthia scoured the fields for hours, searching for a simple flower.

The area was surely beautiful as it was, covered in nothing but short, soft grass rolling over gentle hills, like an ocean of green waves frozen on a calm spring day. As Cynthia surveyed the land, finally—

“Found it!” she cried as she triumphantly plucked a tiny white flower from the ground.

“Barely,” Meagan scoffed. “It’s missing petals and the stalk is bent.”

Cynthia shrugged. “It’s still a flower, and it’s beautiful.” She held up the treasure and smiled, admiring the singular splash of nuance amid the emerald waves.

. . .

This story was born out of a need for positivity. It saddens me (and, to be honest, irritates me sometimes) to see so many people in the world today turning positives into negatives at the drop of a hat. As soon as something good happens, they immediately see the potential shadows it could cast instead of seeing the good for what it is, appreciating and enjoying it in the moment.

I honestly can’t even imagine what it’s like to live life always expecting the worst and looking past the good. Life is full of lots of bad things, yes – but it’s full of exponentially more bad things if you go looking for them around every corner.

Life is about the flowers, however broken they might be. Let’s look for those instead.

  1. What a great message and sweet story. I agree with you, and a parent of teens, I feel like trying to reframe things for them is my constant job. It’s so easy to dwell on the negative, but it’s far more important to seek out and acknowledge joy.
