Dolphin Names

If you don’t like dolphins, you need to rethink your life choices. It’s pretty well-known that dolphins are super smart, and we’re still finding out amazing facts about them to this day! Within the past 50 years, one of the things that marine biologists have discovered is that dolphins actually have unique “names” for each other, though not the same kind of names we use.

Dolphins actually identify some of their close relations by a unique whistle that belongs to them alone. And yes, each whistle is completely unique to that dolphin! Right now, scientists believe that each dolphin learns their own whistle “name” from their mother when they’re young. Other dolphins learn to copy this whistle, though they don’t repeat just any dolphin’s whistle. Most often, the name is used between a mother and her calf or close friends.

Here’s a fun video someone compiled of lots of different dolphin sounds, including their distinct whistling! I hope you’ll at least get a kick out of watching and listening to them; I certainly enjoyed it!

Have a happy Monday, everyone!
